about

With Shift Your Weight, I was interested in the notions of divergence and convergence within fault lines and how that might translate into a song. I wanted to contrast these notions with their corresponding textures (fragmentation and unity) and consonance and dissonance in my harmonic choices. For instance, what happens when a long major tonality is fractured in the manner of a pointillist painting? Conversely, what happens when a dissonant harmony is melodically and rhythmically the “hook” of a song? Lyrically, I was interested in how closely the language describing fault activity could be read as a discussion about interpersonal relationships. So I tried to write an ambiguous text that addresses divergence and convergence in a similar way. It’s a transmogrification of the fault lines into social activity and vice versa.

lyrics

Can you shift your weight a little over this way? Continental drift explodes all into space.
It’s a stalemate, no one’s at fault
Cracks in geography wither and rot
 Creating cities, destroying blocks
of the maximal stillness that you once thought was silent monogamy until the seizures stopped. Drinking the light like a poet overwrought.
Can you shift my weight a little over that way?
